I found my beta fish underneath the filter and it had sucked up its long flowy fin things and it's wings, then later on I found my little frog up under it and it had sucked it's leg into it and killed it. I just want to know how you change the level of filtration.

I find it odd that your fish / frog are getting sucked into the filter. Even the strongest filters I've ever used have not posed any threat to my fish. Frankly, it is more like that your frog died and was subsequently sucked into the filter intake.

If your filter has an adjustable intake rate, it will be indicated on the top of the filter; you will either be able to turn a nob or a handle, and it will decrease the amount of water it sucks up. If it's a cheaper filter, it may not have this option, and your best bet would be to get a higher quality filter. AquaClear is a good brand.

You can also wrap a nylon suck or put a sponge on the intake.

Most cheap filters have no adjustments on them. You need to get a babyfood jar or small plastic container to put over the intake of the filter. This will still allow water and debris to flow, but will not suck up fish.

Is that filter put together correctly, make sure the strainer is on the end of the suction tube. This will help distribute the suction force so it isn't strong enough to trap fish.

If you don't have the strainer go to the pet shop and buy one. Also make sure you're not using a 75 gallon filter on a 10 gallon tank.

the canister with out media is almost ineffective, why do not you have biomedia and a sponge in it..?? and particular, the whispers have not got solid biologic filtration, yet you will possibly desire to not purchase the smallest aquaclear you decide on a lots greater one, or an Emperor filter out. notice: the rankings on filters, is deceptive. i take advantage of in basic terms the pass value and quantity of filter out aspects while judging filters. Your tank desires approximately 500 gallons consistent with hour finished pass from all your filters for many fish, and extra in case you save cichlids or have an outstanding sort of adornment/rocks interior the tank....

There should be a knob on the top....if not put the plastic filter piece on the end of the filter tube thats down in the water, thats what it's provided for, so fish dont get sucked up it.

I used one of these

on my whisper to keep it from sucking up things. It distribute suction evenly, holds small dirt particles, and adds area to colonize bacteria.

Your local fish store should be able to size you up for the right one if you tell them your filter model.

get a piece of panty hose and tie it around the intake -- those things are deadly for lots of small creatures. you can also buy sponges to put over it at the pet store.
