It could be regional differences. I'm from BC.

It was Floor hockey when we played it in a gym, and we used a hollow plastic orange puck. And regulation plastic hockey sticks that wouldn't scuff up the floor and only elementary schools seem to have. The rules were weird too, more like ringette. (I think) Yes, we used a ball and real sticks whenever left in a less structured environment, and still called it floor hockey. I could see in a more structured league where floorball might start coming into use. Say an older recreation league, using real sticks and a ball. It isn't a given, if their venue values the floor more than the revenues from hosting such a thing. But I have never seen the term.

Ball hockey we played in the arena in the off season when the ice was taken out. It was a very different game than floor hockey, large cement surface instead of a small wood surface, and ice hockey sticks.

Hockey in the streets was always street hockey. I never heard it called ball hockey.

EDIT: Having surfed a bit, it looks like it is just what they call floor hockey in Europe, and with international competition the name is catching on.

They changed the name because Floor Hockey was played with a puck, and Floorball is played withg a ball.

I've always preferred a ball for floor hockey. Pucks don't move too well on a gym floor.

It was always "floor hockey" when I was kid...

Looks like when it was organized in Europe they modified the name and the game somewhat.

Perhaps we are showing our age, Habitant. . :-)
