Hi. Grandparents like to feed the birds in their backyard.
I used to be able to pick up huge bags of bird bread [reject human bread] for them at a place on Milwaukee and Belmont for a buck a bag. They closed down. Know any place on northwest side where they sell cheap bread. I tried the Sara Lee outlet store...their cheapest is $1.35 a loaf. This is grandparents only past-time in this zero degree weather. Any suggestions that I can try? It gets a little expensive feeding their birds at about 25 loaves a month plus the bird seed I buy for them. Thanks.

I know you can 'bake' a bird loaf, it's full of fat and nuts and things and I would think that it'd be a lot better for the birds to eat. You may be able to get the recipes off a Wild bird web site . You could also save all the left over bread crusts etc and ask your neighbours to save theirs for you. You could also bake some bread with only flour and water and mix in some nuts and seeds.

Au Bon Pain gets rid of all left over baked goods each night. They bake fresh stuff daily. As a customer you can go in and get rolls, etc dirt cheap. I admit I do it for myself sometimes... get a loaf of french bread for like .50. Worth a shot if the other suggestions don't pan out.
