I just moved into a new rental apartment. The refridgerator was open and turned off when I moved in. All I have done is plug-in the unit and close the door. There is no food in there.

Personally, I dont' think baking soda works that well and definitely not for tough odors. I have the perfect solution that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a littler purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. I use this product everywhere including car, storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it. Definitely worth trying.

Take some hot water and vinegar and wip down the doors, the shelves and even the freezer. After a fridge has not been used in a while it will smell like that. The vinegar and hot water should get the smell out and it also sanitizes the fridge.

Probably disinfectant used when they unplugged the ref. Try putting a whole box of baking soda on a cake pan-put the pan in the refrig for a couple days-should neutralize-after that keep a box of baking soda in the refridge for continuous duty-some brands have a mesh front on the box for this purpose

Insert two boxes of opened baking SODA. not powder. The baking SODA will absorb the enticing aroma! They will need to be replaced in 3 months! This has been a How- To for years!!

Many people say baking soda and thats good, but vinegar works better! It eliminates ALL nasty smells and no.....the vinegar smell will not remain. Put some vinegar in a bowl, put it in the fridge, close the door and leave overnight.

Tell your sister to dump the moth balls and wash the belts in a mild detergent and warm water, hang to dry. If the leather becomes stiff, apply a light hand lotion and rub it in gently and wipe away excess.

They say to use an open box of Baking Soda.
But I think if you want to increase the surface arean to absorb the smell you might want to dump it into a plate.
