Well I'm a High School Senior in New York, I used to live in California but moved here about a year and a half ago. Now after I graduate High School I plan on applying to a school and then moving back to California, the thing is tuition and applying has been bothering me since a slightly different set of factors play in when I'm not a Cali resident anymore.

So I was wondering I've lived here and gone to school here in NY for about 1 and a half years coming up on two this August, am I still a California resident? Or am I officially an NY resident?
And whether I am CA or NY how long does it take for one to become a resident of a state? Are the time periods different for each?

I would contact admission at the schools you are looking to apply to in CA and see what they say. I gut is telling me that you lost your CA residency and your out of luck - but I could be wrong. It never hurts to ask.

Good Luck!!!

if you have a valid id or driver's license from that state then you can still be considered a resident, however you may have invalidated it by going to hs in ny...the span of amnesty is usually 90 days, 2 yrs. may be too long for you to argue...if you have relatives in the state apply under their address or a friend's, just make sure you have access to the mail so that you can correspond with the school when they send you info and forms that need to be filled out...some states also have a "native clause" which states that being born in the state gives you permanent residency...

Call the city to find out if you are a llegal resident of new york becuase you cant be one in ca and ny unless your family has two houses or parents divorced.
