How does it work? I understand i seperates the particles of hydrogen and oxygen, but what do I need to actually perform the task? Can I do it with household objects?

Specifically I would like to use it to create HHO gas which is the cleanest burning gas with the most natural by product I can think of. Anyone know if that's the natural by product of electrolysis, or would I have to create another step in the process?

Electrolysis of water is actually an oxidation/reduction reaction. At the cathode, electrons react with hydronium ions to give hydrogen gas. At the anode, oxygen is produced by oxidation.

The problem with electrolysis is that it is very slow and the economics are ultimately determined by the cost of the electricity. Although power supplies produce the required DC current much more economically than batteries, the energy cost currently outweighs the value of the gases produced.

You can do electrolysis with graphite electrodes and a battery.
