Hi there-I have read over some of the Q&A already posted for white noise while sleeping & I need some recommendations.
I have always slept w/ a fan since I was a kid and cant do without it.I've tried radio but anything like the TV that produces light in the room or radio that has anything but a constant unbreaking sound annoys me and wakes me.I currently use a VERY loud fan to sleep w/ but to get the sound as loud as I need it I have to run it on high.I have 2 dogs who are NOT happy with that situation during the winter months who sleep in my room.It has been below 0 F here in temps this week so a fan is just too cold.Even turning it the other way-the air still circulates back into the room and is freezing my doggies. My question is: I have seen some white noise machines online but never tried them in person as I am really rural and have no stores that sell these things close. I need recommendations on some that provide really LOUD noise similar to a fan. Thanks!

Just an extra addendum: I cannot sleep with music on, songs drive me nuts and it actually wakes me versus helps me sleep because it isnt a constant unchanging sound like a fan. I have a newer style humidifier but the sound is VERY mild compared to the loud fan I am used to. It took me ages to find a fan loud enough. I started sleeping with one in Georgia as a kid and it was old and loud, and newer fans are very quiet. I moved to cold Indiana and cant do without the noise but I'm gonna freeze if I dont find a less breezy alternative! lol

I know how you feel. I have to sleep with the fan on, just for the noise too. My kids got me a "Conair" sound therapy machine last Mother's Day and I love it. I still have to have the fan on, but I find it hard to sleep w/o my sound machine on too. They got it at Wal-Mart for somewhere between $12 & $15. I have seen the same machine online and in catalogs for about $40. It has 10 different sounds, including white noise (I prefer thunderstorm or rainfall). When we got our puppy last July we used the heartbeat sound to help soothe her during crate training at night. If you can get to a Wal-Mart I'm sure you can find one. Or you could try walmart.com or www.conair.com. Hope this helps!!!
Meri Beth, I found the exact one I use at conair.com in the health & wellness section - model SU1W for $19.99 and a similar one at walmart.com by HoMedics for $19.88 w/6 sounds & auto shut-off timer.☺

Thank you! I grew up in Florida and had a fan on every night. When I moved up to Massachusetts and didn't need it for cooling anymore, I discovered I can't sleep without the noise. Then I met the woman who is now my wife and she thought I was nuts for having a fan on at night in the winter! I found an old air purifier that has a noisy fan, but it sucks the air through a filter so the output is pretty minimal in terms of air flow. All the ones I see lately try very hard to minimize the noise, which to me (and you) is useless. See if you can find an old one at a garage sale or online.
I've tried the white noise generators. They're OK - I use a portable one when I travel - but I've never found anything that can replace the aural comfort of a fan.

I am staying on a pretty busy street, as well. My computer makes a constant humming noise that helps. I know my computer isn't nearly loud enough to block out most of the busy noises. But if my computer is near my bed, then it works pretty well. So maybe try a noisy computer? The fans inside make a little noise.

I am in the same boat with you but instead of my dogs freezing, my girlfriend complains it's too cold. I have an old metal square fan and it is amazingly loud. What I did is used shoe boxes so I could lay the fan down but not directly on the floor. It greatly reduces the amount of air blowing but keeps the noise. I actually can put it on low and it seems to be as loud as it is on high.

Use the radio or TV tuned to white noise/static but cover it at night to block the light. You'd have an in inexpensive sound machine with adjustable volume.
The light from my clock radio bugs me so I cover it with a black scarf.

You might try a humidifier in the winter. The ultrasonic ones are pretty quiet but you can get a non-ultrasonic one that uses a fan and is pretty loud.

Why are you trying to feed your dependency on having any kind of noise to be able to sleep?
Get rid of your crutch and do it now you're better off in the long run. I would hate to be involved with someone that needed to sleep with noise in the background, you would be sleeping in the garage for sure.
Stay up for more than 24 hours then the next night you would have no problems sleeping.

Go to Radio Shack or on-line-there are noise generators made which can simulate fan (white) noise-also babbling brooks, surf, birds in the morning etc. We do need to please the dogs!!!
Not too expensive either!!
Now get some sleep!!!!

There are CDs with white-noise type sounds on them. You might take a look at that.
Have you looked at E-Bay or perhaps Amazon.com? Almost anything can be found there.
Good luck!

Get one of those little ceramic heaters. Turn on the fan, but not the heat.
