Sounds like a Pachypodium.(pha-kee-poh-dee-uhm).Pachupodiums go through a leafless winter dormancy, when water should be withheld. Most have long ,thin ,leathery foliage which appears at the top in the springtime. When mature, they develop flowers that range from yellows to reds and appear at the top of the plant.Only one thing,Pachypodiums grow to twenty feet high.Have you ever transplanted it?I had one that was twenty foot high and the night before it was picked up,( I donated it to the arboretum)it fell into the pool and broke into a million pieces during a wind storm. Good luck, enjoy it,they have really beautiful flowers!

If it's not an Organ pipe or Barrel cactus maybe it's some kind of chola. There are several types other than teddy bear (jumping cactus) One type of chola is called a "Mexican fruit chain" and this could be the one but without seeing a picture of it...I'm not sure. Your welcome to e-mail me a pic of this if you want and I can propaly help. Good Luck
