Well anything with a mouth can bite but garter snakes are pretty docile. I have heard that corn snakes can be more nippy and bite but it doesn't really hurt. Snakes can have some nasty bacteria in their mouths and that is usually the worst part of getting bit by a pet snake. well all reptiles are going to require heat of some kind whether it be light or an under tank heater. Stay away from heat rocks they are terrible and can burn yoour reptile and can end up to be fatal.

Garters are great pets. They will eat earthworms like candy as well as minnows & just require a water bowl, a hiding place, and for light, you can use a regular flourescent light like a fish tank light, or an incandescent bulb like a reading lamp which will also supply heat as well. Young garters can be a bit nippy, as they see you as a threat & will defend themselves, but this passes quickly with regular handling. Also, they can spray you with poop as a defense, but this too stops quickly once they get used to being handled. Their bite is usually not even noticed as their mouths, when they're young , are too small to cover a finger tip. If you do manage to get bit by a larger garter, just wash the bite mark off with soap & water & check to see if any of the small teeth broke off in the wound. If there are teeth present, just brush them out & wash the area.

I had a couple garter snakes as a kid. They do bite but it's really not that bad and it's non venomous. You need to get them a small heater light. Also keep some rough rocks in their tank too so they can shed their skin.

we had a garter snake for a while, it had been injured by the forklift, boy, are they ever good at getting out! our cat would always find it and stand like a statue pointing at it! they smell awful, though, we released him in the spring. it never bit us, and why would it need special lighting, they live in the same environment we do?

I have a corn snake wich is about 1 foot long and has never bitten me, but they might bite as they get older and bigger in size. an adult snake bit could brake the skin and cause bleeding and off course it does cause pain.
