I am trying to put in a new toilet seat, but the old one's bolts are all rusty, and when I try to turn them, they just crumble....what do I do? (Besides call somebody who knows what the heck they are doing?)

Well, if you want to do it yourself, take a hammer and a screwdriver, and pound away at the bottom, it will take a while, but it will start to bend, then you can grap pliers and a wrench and break it free.

Sometimes these things take a little elbow grease, so invite me on over, and I'll help you with your plumbing, in more ways than one

OH, by the way, you're beautiful :)

do yo have a hack saw blade, You need to be careful because you can break the bowl. What you need to do is get a pair of vise grips and clamp on to the bottom of the bolt under the toilet. Then you need to take the hack saw and be real careful and cut the bolt off on the top side. If the seat is loose the blade will slide under the part of the seat that fastens to the toilet. If you take you time and watch what you doing you should be able to do this. It may take a little while but be persistent and it will work.

It is not unusual to have to cut them off. First, soak it in Liquid Wrench; do not use WD40 on this problem. You can try to put a vice grip on them to hold the bolt while you turn the nut with a socket. If not, I use a dremel with a fiberglass reinforced cutoff wheel.

You could try to drill out the bolt, but that is usually much harder than it looks. Also, do NOT hit anything on a toilet with a hammer, they can break. If you have never cut with an outfit like I suggested above, you will be amazed at how easy it is.

The bolts have a rectangular head and are riding in a T-slot. Take a punch and drive the old ones out. I believe clockwise is the direction. Then go to your local hardware store and ask for toilet flange bolts. Lookin the plumbing section. Should be a kit with bolts, washers, nuts, ant the pretty white caps. All for the low, low price of a couple of dollars!

Get new bolts. They should be made out of brass anyways and there is a nut from the underside you loosen. Not from the top. The top you hold in place.
