Rate of blood flow during donation is determined by vein size, hydration (how much water is in the body), and blood pressure. Eating salty foods the day before will increase thirst (so you will probably drink more) so the result will be a well hydrated body.

This is purely anecdotal -- I have no medical citation to reference, just my own personal experience (4 gallon donor pin).

When I have vinegar the night before I give blood (like a pickle, or italian dressing), the blood flows like water. If I forget to eat something with vinegar the night before, the blood flows like molasses and it takes over 20 minutes to fill a pint.

Try eating something with vinegar the night before.
