I used to live in California and moved to NY about a year and a half ago. Now I plan on going back to Cali after my school year ends, to attend a state University there, hopefully. Anyways I was wondering how long it takes for someone to become a resident of the state they live in? And if you moved does and that time has not passed or whatever does that still make you a resident of the previous state, in my case..am I New York resident or still a Cali one? Also how long does it take for you to become a resident of a certain state?

For the purpose of attending college, you must reside in the state for 12 months (365 days prior to start of the term you enter the college) to get the state resident tuition costs.

If you were in NY as a non-resident student the entire time you were there, then you would still qualify as a Ca resident.

If you were attending school as a resident student, then you would be considered a resident of NY.

If you are a minor and your entire family moved to NY, being that you lived there over a year, then you would be considered a NY resident.

There might be some loopholes you could look into ... you won't know unless you check it out. Ask the student center at the University you want to go to.
