what are some of the cheapest places to eat in Vegas? I'll be going there in April, and have heard that the cheap buffets and shrimp cocktails and such hardly even exist there anymore. Is this true? How much are the cheap, average, and superb buffets there?

Sorry so many questions, just not sure what to expect, and need to stay on budget.
Any help would be great. THANKS!!

Another poster already recommended the very best place to eat - Ellis Island. The have the 10 ounce sirloin dinner for 4.95 which comes with a big salad, steak, starch and a mound of green beans. They have 1.50 in-house brewed beer and root beer - ice cold and delicioius. They also had a meatloaf special for 4.95 (salad, starch and veggie too). Mondays they have a HUGE BBQ plate for 6.95. Huge breakfasts for cheap. Pretty much everything on the menu is under $10. Service was friendly and I thought the food was fantastic. I've read reviews that said the place was dirty. I consider myself Howard Hughes kind of anal and I certainly didn't think the place was dirty. Dated? Most definitely. But not dirty at all. We ate there twice in 3 days (breakfast and lunch) and would have eaten there more often if we had been there longer. It's at 4178 Koval Street, which is 2 blocks behind Bally's/Paris, next to a 7-Eleven. It's not a bad walk at all and worth the effort. www.ellisislandcasino.com

Here are a few other suggestions for cheap eats:

Split a meal at Cheesecake Factory in Caesar's Palace. One meal isn't necessarily cheap, but the portions are huge and if you are willing to split, it's affordable. The meatloaf sandwich is basically two full meatloaf sandwiches with a mound of fries. More than enough to split.

Mr. Lucky's at Hard Rock has steak and shrimp for $8. It used to be a 7-7-7 special - 7 ounce sirloin, 7 shrimp for 7.77. We didn't get there this last time so not sure if it's still around.

Coke World is near MGM Grand. On the second level you can get an 8 ounce Coke in the bottle for $1 or a 16 ounce fountain drink (they have hard to find favorites like Mello Yellow, Mr. Pibb, Tab, etc.) for $1.50. It was a nice break from all of the walking.

In downtown there is Mermaid's Casino (Fremont Street) with dollar hot dogs and fried twinkies.

We've been altogether unimpressed with every single buffet we've ever tried. Maybe it's just too much food to even think about. But if you are going to do a buffet, I would suggest picking one of the better ones but eating your big meal for lunch and during the week. Alladin, Bellagio or Mirage would be my pick.

We stayed at the Venetian for an unbelievable bargain in January and there were two things we would recommend. On the casino level (right near the casino) there is a restaurant called Grand Lux Cafe. Not "cheap", but we again split a huge meal there one afternoon and another evening, we had a Thai pizza and appetizer that was quite an affordable meal.

Also near the casino are some fast food-like places. You can get 1.50 Krispy Kreme doughnuts, but what we really liked on our last day was that most of them had a hearty breakfast combo plate for around $8. Not bad at all. This isn't in the food court where you shop and where the gondolas are, but there is a small food court just off the casino.

We wanted to try but didn't get to Wynn and Red 8 Asian Bistro. Rachael Ray recommended it on her show once for dim sum on F, Sa or Su. She said it was pretty cheap money, depending on how many items you order.

There's also a PF Changs in Alladin. That should be a reasonably priced chain.

Can't help you with cheap shrimp cocktail. I wouldn't risk food poisoning over it :-) Enjoy!!

I live in Las Vegas, really all the buffets on the strip are exspenive. If you come out to Henderson (same thing as Las Vegas) Sunset Station is like 13 dollars per person! Great food! Or if your not trying to go to the buffet you can go to, like Olive Garden, or Chilis, or well anyplace really. Drive up or sit down. Not all are expensive. The America in the New York New York casino/ hotel is like 15 dollars per plate! Grate place for eating!! They have a giant map of America.

Oh the good ole days when you could get a steak dinner for $9.95.

Food in Vegas is not really cheap anymore.

But, if you want a buffet try the RIO, the seafood buffet is wonderful. I can not remember the cost.

The best thing you can do is when you check in to the hotel ask the concierge, or one of the bell hops for their recommendations on where to eat and ask about the cost. I always have received great recommendations from them.

Viva Las Vegas!

Really, all of the cheap food is off of the strip, or it's downtown. So if you're staying on the south end of the Strip, you'll be hard pressed to find really cheap food. The best thing you can do, is when you get here, pick up booklets (like Vegas 24/7) because they break down all of the restaurants in the casinos and then give you an avg price listing. That's what I do when I go to the strip. But if you aren't going ot be on the Strip, any local casino will have good deals on food.

I live in Henderson (right next to Las Vegas) and eat out all the time. We use coupons. The local newspapers have coupons for many fine places. You could go to a casino and become a Slot Member, they usually give you a free ticket books. In these books are coupons for many things, especially food.
The big casinos didn't get that way by giving anyone cheap eats. Go to a smaller, local casinos way, way, off the strip. Stay away from the strip! The mega-casinos are there to take your money, and take as much as you are willing to lay down. If you must go to a casino, I recommend any STATION Casino off the strip.
Have fun.

Your best bet is to eat off the Strip. The casinos charge to much because they can. The Rio and Bellagio have great buffets but you will pay for it. There is a great place on the southern part of the Strip called Instant Replay Sports Bar that is good.

New York New York 99 cent hot dog. Station casinos which are a little off the strip offer reasonable buffets.

Arizona Charlies Steak, Eggs, Hash Browns and Toast $3.99. It's not on the strip though. On the strip...stuff costs more. the Wynn Buffet costs a lot, but it's awesome.

Buffets are everywhere. Some are in the $15 range for dinner (breakfast is way cheaper), but that's what you might spend for one dish at regular restraunt. This is all you can eat- incl. appetizer & dessert.
