Blue Skies by Tom Waites 1971 and it wasn't the father. It was the mother. She left him to care for the children and the cupboards were bare and they had no clothes to wear. Hope this helps

It's either Everclear or Good Charlotte, Everclear writes a lot about divorce and Good Charlotte has a couple songs that are about fathers leaving.
