I leave my kitchen light on all evening, it is a fluorescent tube. I know they take more energy turning them on, that why i do it, but is there a time limit where it becomes uneconomical to leave it on and should be turned off. e.g if i know i will be away from it for an hour, will it take more energy turning it off and on again later than just leaving it on?

The on/off puts a stress on the starter or ballast. Continuing to use old lamps that have begun to turn black on the ends also stresses the ballast - that is the item that is the most expensive to replace. So there are trade offs for the economy - I'd say just leave it on. You could probably contact the power company or the manufacturer to find the energy usage of your particular lamp and judge from there. Have you considered a night light plugged into an outlet as an alternative? Just enough light to not trip on your way to the fridge but not enough to prepare dinner by.

It is not economical to leave it on in the hope that you are making a saving. The time limit would be two or three seconds.

Well, yes. If you are not there what is the light for? They shut them down in schools if the room is vacant for an hour or more.
