"NEW YORK (Reuters) - New Yorkers who blithely cross the street listening to an iPod or talking on a cell phone could soon face a $100 fine.

New York State Sen. Carl Kruger says three pedestrians in his Brooklyn district have been killed since September upon stepping into traffic while distracted by an electronic device. In one case bystanders screamed "watch out" to no avail."

So, you think that it is better if "they" control what we do insead for us to think criticly?
Maybe perhaps "they" should just implant a computer chip in us for better "care"?

maybe we should put a limit on words per day spoken, and throw people in jail for going over the limit. I mean I never want to say someone deserves to die, but if you are dumb enough to just walk out into the street in New York without knowing what is coming, you are a total moron, I don't care if you have a phone, iPod or anything else attached to your head, those people are dumb. This is just another example of the need people must feel to be governed or protected. "Some morons just got hit by a car!!! We need a law to keep this from happening!!! What would we do if we didn't have all of these laws to make sure we weren't complete idiots!!" People should stop being dumb and look both ways...

Like everything else, with all the new technology, there have to be new laws to protect those who might take it a little too far. In New York City, just crossing the street is a life threatening experience, so just how smart is it to cross the street not totally aware of what is going on. While the new law might seem stupid, I think it will save lives.

The government has no right to be giving out tickets/fines for this. While it is tragic that such things happen--people should know to take care of themselves.
If the government wants to do anything, they should put more public service announcements on radio, TV, online, etc. They should warn the public about how dangerous this is--but not get into calling it criminal activity--this still isn't the USSR.

The fine should be stiffer. All states should adopt the measure. They should also limit the sound level of car stereos too.
I also support banning the use of cellphones while a car is in motion, while leaving room for certain situations.

I think I'm going to get a ticket. At least I look both ways and keep the volume to a point where I can hear my surroundings.

I think it is only a scare tactic. Maybe 100 people will be fined but something tells me the police have bigger concerns.

If it helps, I see it's correct, maybe they have some studies to back this.

I think the fine is mostly about stupidity, which is what it is.
