It seems that the only questions in Politics last week were about Global Warming. Now that its been a couple of weeks since the news of the consensus on the wording of the UN Commission Report on Climate Change has been out not a peep to be heard. If it is truly a threat shouldn't it be more in the forefront of our conscience?

Earnest T. PhD/THC, I know that report means nothing. It was sponsored by the UN, that should be enough to at least make an honest person question the motives. I was just amazed at how passionate, yet uninformed, people were on the subject and then zip. Nothing more.

It's a myth. Science can't be based on a "consensus". I suppose those who believe in the myth also believe the world is flat.

Depends on who you're talking about. Should global warming and the environment be constantly on the minds of representatives, businesses and the news media? Yes.
On sites like this, though, news travels fast and the rule of the day is what's fresh or what people haven't trampled to death.
Sadly, any real global warming thread on here is going to be flooded by junk science, people who think they know more than they do, and likely paid moles.... and that's just the crowd against the idea of global warming... the neo-flat earthers. I see some fine examples in this thread, like Patrickctrombly again claiming that anyone pointing to the current weather being caused by global warming is a "kook". The problem being that this was predicted by the models and that's what people are saying.
I wouldn't call people referring to real scientific research (not speculation, like the right-wing) "kooks".
So, yes and no to your follow-up questions.
And obviously it's still a threat, whatever form it takes, it's a problem. This is a fact that all of the argument conservatives don't seem to get. Whether it's CO2, sunrays, cow farts... whatever... we have an issue to solve and a good place to start is CFCs, which are where we can actually make initial changes and solve other problems at the same time.

Natural global warming will always be a threat. It must be dealt with. The real question is whether or not is humanity driven. There lies the rub. Core samples from the ice shelf have determined that this has happened quite naturally over the millinia on many many occasions with nary a human around. The oceans level has been rising for 8000 years-up 400 feet since that time so that isn't new either. Folks working together to combat this natural phenom is the best way to approach it. Unfortunately, it has become a political football around the world because there are still the chicken littles running around saying the sky is falling. Some scientists think there is still time left to avoid major problems in which case a deliberate and well thought out plan can still be accomplished. Many others say its too late already-in which case we might as well lean back and enjoy the ride. Some others say its a whole lot of BS over something that is quite natural and mankind will just have to make some changes to deal with the inevitable. We will survive very nicely-at least if we can sift the nut cases out before we all have to live in caves and deer skins for the rest of our lives.

Well, you should know something.. . .. That report meant nothing . The UN admitted it was nothing more than a 'Political document' . The UN said the 'Real Report' will come out in May . And the inside track says that scientists will ADMIT that 'Mankind has nothing to do with Global Warming' or that there is NO PROOF of such . Look it up yourself .
Not that it really matters but we've gotten over 40 inches of snow in 9 days, a record for our area . Then we continued setting records for low temperatures .

Its a bunch of hogwash environmentalists saying that they sky is falling. Basically they have an agenda, getting money from governments and corporations to fund their cause. Global Cooling was the talk of the 70's and Global Warming didn't start becoming a big issue until the 90's.
The same scientist that are telling us the earth is getting warmer cannot even tell us if eating eggs is good or bad for our health. We were told in the 70's eggs are bad. Now eggs are good again. So I really have a hard time believing this one.

Of course not.
I guess the main reason no one's talking about it after that report, or at least not as much as they were before the report came out, is because almost everyone realizes how helpless we are to stop Global Warming, and that humanity (or at least humanity in the industrialized nations) is guilty of creating an irreversible problem.
Now that this truth is in the forefront of the news, and that most humans are at least partly responsible, it's not so easy for people to say "that's their problem" because everyone on this planet is now part of the "them".

Its existence is not a political issue any longer, as essentially all members of both major parties agree about that. Therefore, I'm glad to see that this element of the issue is not being discussed on this particular forum.
I would like to see real debate about the best approaches to solving it, though, and I think the politics forum would be a fine place for such a discussion.

It's zero degrees F outside.
That doesn't disprove their theory - but it does underscore that a single heat wave in August doesn't prove it.
But if we get a heat wave next August, you can bet there will be more headlines about global warming.
And you may in the meantime even get some kooks posting that global warming caused this cold weather, rather than that sometimes a weather pattern will bring arctic air further south than is normally the case.

GW isn't a snapshot of today's weather. It is an issue that has proof and science has enough empirical data to show that it is an issue.
One can accept the wisdom of NOAA, NASA and the EPA or the drunk and the doper.
You choose.

That was last week's news. Everybody has forgotten about it now, so there is no need to do anything about it anymore (until the next big story about it comes along).
