I went to the hospital with all three of my girls when my contractions were 3 minutes apart. When I got to the hospital (about 10 minutes away) it took me this long to actually have my kids...
baby #1- 4hrs 23min
baby #2- 4hrs 10 min
baby #3-55 min
Good luck with your delivery!!

Each baby was different. I know for my daughter we left once the contractions were 5 min. apart. We had called the hospital and they said there was no hurry since they wern't over a minute in duration. Well we left anyway since I was looking forward to some nice pain meds. All I can say is I have the parking garage receipt from the hospital that says 6:27 and a birth registration that says 6:34. My second baby took much longer and my third I was only at the hospital for about 1 hr. before she arrived. I would say when the contractions are 5 min apart or if your water breaks head into the hospital. I hate hospitals too...but the birth units tend not to be like the rest of the hospital...and everyone is really nice and nurturing.
Good luck

With my first I stayed at home until the last minute honestly I had her 20 minutes after I got to the hospital. With my second my water broke so I had to go to the hospital right away that's the difference if your water breaks you must go to the hospital to prevent infection. Make sure you talk to your doctor too.
To answer your questions believe me there is a difference between contractions and labor. Once I was in labor I had strong hard contraction that made me scream loud boom boom boom right after each other then it stopped and started again this lasted four hours before we went to the hospital but I live 10 minutes away too so factor that into your decision. Good Luck

If your water breaks, make sure you go- this was when I went- but I had been having contractions 4 weeks prior to going into labor at 41 weeks exactly. But soon after my water broke, very hard contractions started to where I couldn't really do anything but try to breathe through the contraction.... this was when I knew it was definitely time to go. Don't wait too long, but if you feel more comfortable at home for a while when your contractions are 5 min apart, then do that.
Good luck and congrats!

OK, this is going to be a long answer I'm afraid. First, it sounds like you need to have a long talk with your Dr. Explain your fears and dislikes of hospital to him. He can help offer alternatives he thinks will be appropriate for you.
Next, NO-ONE can tell you how long you will be in labor. What I can tell you is labor is usually a bit longer for a first time mom. How much longer, no one can tell you that. Take a pre natle birthing class and I promise you things will go alot smoother. Epidurals are an excellent choice, not only will they keep you comfortable so you can rest up, ( they call it labor for a reason) but if you are relaxed things will move along more quickly!
I have seen many woman with a first time birth go quickly. eight hrs. so telling you when you how long you can safely wait to go to the hosp. is pretty impossible. again pre birth classes and a good re pore with your Dr. are the best advice I can give you. Remember, hundreds of woman in just your state give birth everyday , and almost all will have more than one child so...how bad can it be? Best of Luck

It's best to be sure that your contractions are gonna continue. I always wait until my contractions have been coming consistently for an hour or more. Usually if they stop with in an hours time, then it's false labor. The only way you'll have your baby in the back seat of a car is if you let the contractions go for too long and you've been feeling pressure in your vagina and anus.

What did your DOCTOR tell you to do?? That's whose advice you should follow here. If your doctor told you to get to the hospital when contractions are 5 minutes apart and 1 minute long, then that's when you go to the hospital.
If you don't like the hospital you're delivering at, that's another thing. Most hospitals today have nice birthing rooms, where you labor, deliver and recover all in the same room.

I believe my book from the dr's office says call the hospital when they are between 5 and 10 minutes appart. I waited until I was 7 minutes appart when I had my son.
I had a relatively fast delivery after this, but many people are in labor for several hours (sometimes days) especially when it's their first.

it all depends on the individual women. every cervix is different and dilates at different speeds. my water broke with my first. i was in labor for 7 hours and pushed for 20 minutes before she was born. i was induced with my second. labor lasted 15 hours with her. everybody is different. you should always go to the hospital when the doc warns you to. you could be one of those lucky ladies who has a 30 minute labor and only pushes once before your baby is born.
