What is going on here ? Why is America`s government treating their own defenders (the border patrol) with such strict "justice" while letting the law breaking invaders from Mexico go free, and then some ( $$$ ) ?

I agree with you about the treatment of the drug smuggler.
I'm not sure about the border patrol officers. Fellow border patrol officers testified against them, an unusual situation suggesting they really did do something wrong.
That said, the sentences seem way too long for the crime. They both had good records and one had an outstanding record.
