USB devices kill more equipment than anything else. Static charges on your body travel right to the metal tip of a USB connector and ZAP, a dead hard drive, flash drive, motherboard or perhaps all at once. Make it a rule to always touch the back of your computer case (metal) with your other hand before you plug any USB device into your computer. For a laptop, touch a metal hex screw or outer port shield on the back.

This will discharge any potential to ground, instead of one of the signal lines in the USB.
