I think art is too subjective to be a universal language. Art should convey a concept without words and so should be more universal but the viewer's experience of what that concept actually is can differ. There is evidence that human beings have a collective unconscious that allows us to understand the language of symbols, so perhaps aboriginal art and symbolist art is easier to translate into other cultures. Modern art is less accessible. I find Pollack and Andy Warhol largely unintelligible. Paint splatters and soup tins. Why?!

There are many sign languages. In this country ASL (American Sign Language) is used. Each country has it's own language. Many signs are visually related to the meaning of the word or phrase, so it's likely a person who signs would recognize certain signs in other languages, much like you would recognize a word in another language that's similar to the same word in your language. You would realize that espoza (which is probably spelled wrong) in Italian means the same thing as spouse in English. The word in Spanish is also similar. American Sign Language is a totally separate language from English. The English words are not just translated. There's an entirely different syntax, and it can be quite confusing at first. My deaf friend emails using ASL syntax and sometimes it takes me a while to follow. She reads English just fine, she's a college graduate after all, so she can read what I type. I've only taken 2 classes in ASL, and if I don't use it on a regular basis, I just keep forgetting. I'd show you the sign for I forget if you were here. I use that one a lot.

All cultures have their own art (like: Chinese painting) but yes, I believe art, and especially music, is a universal language -when you see jazz men in Lebanon, for example, it gives to think...

Art and music seem to be universal in their appeal and ease of understanding. However, in 1915, Lawrence of Arabia showed a picture of a man to some nomads in the desert who had never seen white people. They only saw colours on a piece of paper - they could not 'see' that it was a representation of a person.

I personally believe it is the individual's perception that determines their interpretation of art rather than their nationality or culture. Everybody sees the world differently.

I'm thinkin math is the universal language. 2+2 always equals 4. But art can be inspiring to anyone, just not everyone.

I'd have to say that math is the universal language. Math gave birth to a lot of the art that we find today that was created in the past.

I think, yes - it is universal. . . if you find something beautoful or intriguing, or even disturbing. . . I don't think it would matter what culture you were from.

However, it's definitely a matter of taste isn't it? For instance - I don't see the merit in these black splodges on canvas they refer to as modern art?!
