The reality is that 3-D or 4-D U/S is a medical procedure that should be used only if medically necessary, not for recreational purposes.
You are exposing your unborn baby to very high frequency sound waves, which are as loud as the highest note on the piano and as loud as a locomotive train, to your little one.
No one knows for sure whether they are safe, according to my OB. He also said the more exposure your fetus gets, the more risk it entails. And since there is no medical reason to do this, so better to wait to see your baby once it is born.
All those Web sites that people are quoting saying that it is safe are put out by the businesses that make thousands of dollars doing recreational ultrasounds! Think about it: of course they are going to say its safe, if they didn't no one would do it!

There is risk to everything! However, the levels are really low and well within acceptable parameters. There is not as much radiation as what there would be in a regular x-ray. My twins definitely don't like the ultrasounds though! They will get into the worse possible position and stay there so the tech can't get her readings! I had to have a hi-def ultrasound because they though I had a strange reading with a regular ultrasound at our local children's hospital and I asked them about the usefulness of the 4D ultrasounds. They told me that they don't actually have any medical use and that they are for all intents and purposes good for nothing but entertainment. Good Luck!

I was considering having a 3d ultrasound done, before I scheduled the appointment I talked to my doctor about it at my 26 week check-up to find out how safe they are. He informed me that they aren't safe, because the aren't done by qualified staff. My doctor also stated that an ultrasound is still a form of x-ray and if done improperly can cause damage to the baby.
My suggestion to you is to check out the company that is offering the 3d or 4d ultrasound to find out if the procedure is done by qualified ultrasound technicians and under the supervision of a licensed radiologist. How many procedures they have done, did any complications arise from their procedures, etc. So check out the company and make sure they have experience and offer their employees the proper training before going forward.

They are just as safe as any ultrasound and are done by professionals
Where did you hear this?
What is 3D and 4D Ultrasound?
3D ultrasound is simply the computers ability to use standard ultrasound technology and configure it into a 3D image. 4D ultrasound means you can see these 3D images almost instantaneously (real-time 3D)
Is it Safe for Me and My Baby?
Hundreds of studies have confirmed the safety of ultrasound to the mother and baby over the years. Since 3D and 4D ultrasounds use the same ultrasound energy and intensity as standard 2D ultrasound, it is just as safe.

Is 3D 4D Ultrasound Safe for Me and My Baby?
Hundreds of studies have confirmed the safety of ultrasound to the mother and baby. As 3D and 4D ultrasounds use the same ultrasound energy and intensity as standard 2D ultrasound, it is just as safe.

Its funny that OB`s can`t give you an strait answer. My OB has one of those machines in his office and offers this service for an additional fee. My friend`s OB says it isn`t save, not because of the machine but of the people who perform the 3D/4D Ultrasound.
To be honest, my friend owns one of those businesses and she doesn`t make thousands of dollars. She loves her job and sharing this true miracle with expecting parents! She is pregnant herself now too and I know if there was truly an study out there saying it IS harmful, she wouldn`t be in business doing this other peoples babies just to make money!
3D/4D is truly save! It is such a miracle seeing your baby kick and see it at the same time with your partner! Seeing a sneak peek, truly is the best bonding experience!

When I asked my doctor about this, he said that there is no conclusive evidence either way as to the safety of ultrasounds (even the ones the doctor does). Since it is a relatively new technology, there is no long-term research into the effects of repeated ultrasounds on children. My doctor recommended against getting one just for entertainment purposes. His personal theory (and that's all it is, theory, this is definitely not proven) is that it may cause ADD. He said that we didn't have ADD 30 years ago when babies didn't get ultrasounds, but now that people get them like crazy, everybody's kid has ADD. I don't necessarily agree with him, but it is something to think about. He finally just told me that he wouldn't think I'm a bad mom if I got one, but if it was his child, he'd avoid unnecessary ultrasounds. I decided I agreed, so we'll just wait until she's born to see what she looks like!
