My newly installed firewall keeps telling me that "SNMP Service is trying to act as a server". I've no idea what this is and what it's doing on my pc, I've Googled it but I'm none the wiser. Is it safe to allow it? So far I've denyed it and everything seems fine..

Hi there,

Not sure of your specific error and you have not specified whether you are using software (eg Sygate) or hardware (eg Cisco PIX) firewall, so rather difficult to diagnose.

However, SNMP has nothing to do with e-mail or certificates. I think previous correspondents are getting confused with SMTP. It stands for Simple Network Management Protocol. Try disabling it on your firewall. To do that, read firewall iunstructions.

Basically, it's a protocol designed to warn a remote user of a network object's connection state. Have a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Network_Management_Protocol

If you are running a home network, then you definitely don't need it, hence my advice to switch it off. If you have a 2nd-hand firewall, then make sure you disable it even sooner. The correspondent who mentioned a virus MAY be on to something. Naturally, up to date virus scan s/w and definition files on your PC is taken as read.

Hope that helps.
