please explain simple enough so i can draw a diagram.

When a rock, like granite, is deeply buried beneath layers of rocks or glaciers, it is under lots of pressure. If the overlying layers are eroded away and the granite is uncovered, the pressure is released and the granite expands. The outer layers of the expanding granite can actually crack or fracture and pieces of the rock can break off. When they break off in thin, flat pieces, it is called exfoliation.
