They are actually the last step. There are like 2 or 3 prior auditions before the contestants get to Randy, Paula, and Simon. Those 3 only see like a couple hundred in one day.

Jimbo is right, but to add to what he said...The people who audition them before the final judges see them only send through the very best and very worst. The mediocre are sent on their way.

I dont think they go through all of them personaly. I think there are producers who pick from all those people to see who would first actaully make it to Hollywood and second the idiots who suck who make good TV. That is who eventually make it to the judges and on TV.

I read they don't judge all the contestants. Contestants are pre-screened. Some bad contestants are sent through for entertainment purposes.

actually, it is set over a longer period of time than just two days, and auditions usually last about 30 secs to one minute...so we just see some of the ones that last a lil bit longer than usual..:)
