the first year was 1 - has nothing to do with zero the calender we use isn't all that old ( they used other calenders to estimate the number of years from the ( supposed ) coming of Christ

Georgian Calender 1582 ( ours )
Julian Calender predates Christ ( started 45 or 46 BC depending on the source ) but wasn't accurate long term

so you can really say that they started from 1582 since the calender didn't exist till then and wasn't a continuation of a previous calender

It started with 1 and zero was first used in Mexico and Babylonia and not India.
