I do not think stupid people know that they are stupid. It's possible that they're too stupid to know. It's also all in the eye of the beholder. People can be smart about different things, ask me about sports and I can't tell you a thing but ask me about philosophy, animals, anatomy & physiology and I can tell you a whole lot.

Most know. They see other people coming up with answers while they're struggling to understand the question. Those with Downes Syndrome definitely know.
I think you're probably referring to boorishly annoying and ignorant people who blow through life like a bull in a China shop, saying really silly and illogical things, offending everyone around them. If they do know that they're different, they seem not to care. Maybe it's a defense.
I do know some people whose reaction to things they don't understand is that others are stupid or that it must not be important anyway! (Work for one, in fact!).
So, yes and no.

I dont really think there's any such thing as being stupid. everyone understands things different ways and thinks anyone who doesnt think the same as they do is stupid.
someone who does really well academically but cant wire a plug might think someone who can wire a plug but cant string a sentence together is stupid and vice versa
