As far as i know, legally there is NO age limit on drinking alcohol, but it against the law to attempt to buy or purchase on behalf of anyone under 18.

To purchase legally, the age is 18, but in a place SET ASIDE for meals, i.e. a restaurant (not public bar) then it can be any age if accompanied by an adult and consumed with a meal
At home of course it is the same, you can give your kids a quick medicinal toddy at any age..sometime without knowing it, like cough medicine.

You have to be 18 to purchase drink.
There is no law which states how old you have to be to drink it.
our law is based on old presidents that were set 300 years ago or more. Some haven't changed with modern times so are free to new interpretations.
We have no constitution. So our laws are invalid anyway. If you can find an actual case 200 years ago that states a 9 year old is leagally entitled to drink and that no other cases in our legal history have used that case to say he can't,or acts of parliment. Then 9 it is.

Legally 18 but in reality I have seen children drunk as young as 7 years of age. It tears me apart but there's nothing I can do. In these instances the parents are totally nonchalant about it because they're usually piss heads themselves, and the law are just a waste of time, they just couldn't care less. It is a very sad situation, and something really needs to be done. These children don't have the life experiences to know what damage they are doing to themselves, and no-one in their circle seems to care enough to point them in the right direction, or maybe they too are ignorant to the greater implications. I cant say anymore it just hurts me too much. But thank you for bringing it into my conscious mind.

Its 18 in the UK, however, as always, there are variations.
You are allowed to drink 1/2 pint of shandy (or equivalent) in an eating place (i.e, Pub, restaurant etc) as long as you are accompanied by a parent.
You can drink up to one pint of shandy as long as you are at home and in the company of parents.

18, although I've a feeling you can drink beer or wine in a restaurant at 16 if you are with your parents (I could be wrong about that), and you are allowed to give children alcohol at home in Scotland as long as they are older than 5, I don't know about England and Wales.
