yes in theory it is possible, through IMEI number, which is unique to every single mobile in the world...so when ever someone to switch on mobile with any mobile network in the world it's IMEI number will be register to that network and the network operator will be able to provide the exact location, as each and every zone where you can access mobile signal got a cell (thus name cellular) address, which can help to locate it....

Why would you want to trace a cell phone. A lost cell phone's journey happens like this; A cell phone is lost. The finder of the cell phone either will use the cell phone for his/her self, or sell it on Ebay. And if that phone is unlocked, that lost phone can be sold for hundreds. And if you found some stranger using your lost cell phone, it would be very very difficult to retrieve it from that person. The best you could do is just have it turned off.

Call it before it runs out of power. Perhaps someone will answer and return it to you. If not, be sure to get the number temporarily disconnected so no one can run up your bill.
Tracing it through the phone company is costly so y ou'd be better off getting a new phone anyway.

Try calling your phone. If you lost it in your house, you'll hear it ringing. If someone else found your phone, they may answer it.
Many phones send tracking information to the cell network, but I don't know how precise it is or if it works when you're not in a call. Call your cell phone company and ask if they can help. If the first person you talk to isn't helpful, ask them to escalate your call (transfer you to someone more knowledgable).

if it's in your house or car or if ther's a particular plce where you KNOW you lost it, and it's on, call it using your home phone, or a friend's cell...
but if somebody took it, i don't think you can trace it, no... sorry.

Is it turned on or on an active call? If not then NO. Can you call it and look for it by following the sound of the ringing?
