If I read correctly, it ships with over 32,000+ drivers. It detected everything and installed drivers for everything but my onboard sound. Mainly because I went with the 64bit version... I was able to go to the RealTek site and download the 64bit Vista driver and it works like a champ.
Was a little sketchy at first, it has a slight learning curve but it is pretty damn sharp and I am digging it. As of yet, I have no real complaints, other than how a few things are renamed, and in different places... the pros by far outweigh the cons.

Plus with the Automatic Update option from the Control panel checked, you will get the newest driver downlaoded to the computer, motherboards are not a question right now, I did some beta testing, the video card, memory and hard drive are for the time being the biggest concern, in time sound cards and other peripherals will be a possible issue.
But things like a DVD or CD-RW are just extras, although the loading now is done with a DVD and in future, Microsoft may go to an on-line sales and licencing way to buy and upgrade software.
You need a 128 or better video card, 1-2 gig of memory, 3 or 4 is better depending on the version, CPU of over 2 and 3+ is better, and now with 200, 300 and 400 gig HDD at reasonable prices, all the upgradeable parts are there to make it a better experience.
I do this as my in-home business as a A+ and MCSE tech rep for a on-call outsourcing unit.

Before you try vista GOOGLE this "windows vista problems and issues"
Meanwhile if you want a reliable, up to date operating system - get UBUNTU. It's free plus all of the software that you will ever need is free too. You can order a CD or download it at:

Vista is too new and like all Microsoft OS they beta test it on the consumer. I would wait a year to install it. Let them get the kinks out. So far I have heard nothing but horror stories about it.

Drivers for XP will probably work for Vista..
But to be sure you can go to the manufacturers web site and look for available downloads for your specific components..
Also drivers are available through the free internet sites like ...
www.driverguide.com
Good luck
