Ok so I have 2 children. Over a year ago I was raped then I found out afterwards I was pregnant. I couldn't bare to keep the child as a constant reminder of what happened to me so I aborted very early. Now here I am in a happy relationship and we planned a pregnancy. I'm 8 weeks along and just read today that abortion can cause all sorts of problems in later pregnancies, cancer, excessive bleeding, handicaps, and even death. I had never heard that before....is it true? Should I be worried?

Kristen....you should stop judging people when you don't know the whole story. I'm not a believer in abortion either only in rape circumstances I find a reason for it sometimes. In my case it was an incestuous rape, not only was I devastated and embarrassed (even though it wasn't my fault) but I was also worried about how the baby would turn out. I'd like to see what people like you do in cases like that! I really don't believe you'd have that self-righteous attitude if it happened to you!!!!

Safe, uncomplicated abortion should not affect your ability to have a child in the future. In future pregnancies, it DOES NOT

cause birth defects
cause premature birth or low infant birth weight
make ectopic (not in the uterus) pregnancy more likely
make miscarriage more likely
make the risk of infant death more likely

Having more than one abortion also should not affect future pregnancies.

Just make sure to take all your vitamins, eat very healthy and stay away from smoke and alcohol.

You should be fine, but make sure to always go to the doctor if something doesn't seem right. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Sorry to hear about your past. I think you did the best thing though, I'm not for abortions but if I was raped I'd have aborted it also, I would end up not liking the child as it would be a constant reminded of what happened.

Congrats on this pregnancy though! and I wish the best upon you and your unborn child :)

Remember the old adage about believing only half of what you read? I don't necessarily agree with abortion but you have to take most of what you hear on the news and in regular magazines with a grain of salt. Remember the Times article from the 80's that said a woman of a certain age had a better chance of getting killed by a terrorist than getting married and the new John Mayer song that when they own the news you get what they want you to get? Basically be truthful with your doc, they won't judge -- and I understand your situation with the abortion -- no one should ever judge you. Then, put all of the other stuff aside because you don't know the motivation of the author (think Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity, etc. with the Terry Shiavo thing - didn't here much about it when the autopsy showed that her brain was severely damaged and looked like a sponge (just for example, not making a political statement)). All you are reading is one person's theory and seeing the stats they way they distort them, just like drug companies make stats look good to get approval on certain drugs, then years later we find out the truth. Congrats on the new little one and best wishes. Relax and enjoy!

I wouldn't worry about it. Now days Abortions are much safer than they used to be. There is always a risk, but I wouldn't dwell on it and just enjoy your pregnancy. I had an abortion when I was 15 (8 years ago) and now I am married w/ 2 children. My pregnancies went great, no complications at all. I am sorry for what you had to go through, but congrats on the pregnancy!

Wow! What a scary thing to read.

I do not believe it, to an extent. Any pregnancy can reak havoc on your body, but we are MADE to carry babies. Technology these days allows for safe abortions, which reduces the risk if complications later.

I have not had an abortion, but I had three miscarriage and a DNC was performed with each. A DNC is an abortion in reality and I have had THREE healthy babies (ages 10, 8 and 1) with no complications from those DNCs.

I am positive you will be ok. :)

These are "studies" that are still under much debate. I know someone who had multiple abortions but eventually had 4 healthy boys. I wouldn't worry too much about it....some of these sites are supported by Pro-Life groups and are meant to scare us, but it's true...abortions aren't 100% safe and can SOMETIMES lead to problems. Just like you can SOMETIMES get into a car accident if you're in a car....doesn't mean it will happen. I don't mean to sound too flippant of this serious matter, but I wouldn't worry if I were you. You can bring up any concerns with your doctor.

Your risk of miscarrige does go up, but not so much that you need to worry about it.
I didn't have an abortion, but I had a miscarrige that required the same surgery, (D&C). I too was worried about pregnancy loss and other problems with future pregnancies, but went on to have 4 beautiful little boys.
It will not cause you child to be handicapped or have cancer ~ honestly.
Good luck with your pregnancy and try not to worry too much.

No, you shouldn't worry. It is true that late abortions, such as those done in the second and third trimesters can sometimes damage the uterus and cause problems in later pregnancies, but NOT early first trimester abortions.

Good luck with your pregnancy & please don't worry! Talk to your doctor about it if it u r still concerned.

The first poster is right, but most women who have only had one abortion can have normal pregnancies later. With each successive abortion, your chances of carrying a child to term get slimmer.

Not true.

Before you listen to any anti-choice garbage on that, keep in mind that loads of women have D&C procedures, or take abortion-inducing drugs when they miscarry -- and you don't hear nonsense horror stories about the effects of _that_.
