Chevy Silverado Oil

I know the newer cars and trucks have much smaller holes in the heads than the old ones so they recommend the oils like 5w-30 but an old truck like yours should probably have at least a 30 weight oil and It won't hurt it to put in 40 or 50 weight oil. If the motor has a lot of miles on it, the high mileage oil will help keep it from wearing out sooner (they put a little bit of brake fluid in it to make the seals expand). The most important thing is to change it on a regular basis. Good Luck!

I had a 93 Silverado with a 350 engine. I was running 20/50 in it from 180k miles until I replaced the engine at 326,500 miles. I'd try running straight 30 weight oil first then if if smokes any at all, I would go to 20/50. The main thing is, keep the oil changed regularly. I also used Slick 50 engine treatment in it every 50k miles.

The guy that used slick 50 probably would have gotten 100-200 thousand extra miles out of that engine not using that junk.....
20w-50.... are you leaking a lot of oil? burning a lot of oil? If no..... stick to 5w-30 and 10w-30..... 20w-50, I reserve that oil for a beater car.... something I wouldn't care die or something I want to get rid of soon....

Depending on the mileage of the truck 20w50 may be too thick. The norm is 10w30. If it has over 60,000 you might go with a 10w40 oil, but 20w50 is probably too thick.

use the owners manual, it a wealth of information, if no book call a gmc dealer , ask , mark it on the valve cover. it might be listed on the dip stick.

10W30 will probably be fine. 20/50 sounds pretty viscous to me.
