For the most part professional companies create brochures in Quark Express. Adobe makes also a program, that is gaining popularity in the design world, called InDesign. Either program can/is used in professional environments.
Each of these programs is dependent on a photo editing program and a vector editing program. These programs create .tiff and .eps files that are placed within a document. The standard photo editing program is Adobe PhotoShop. While the standard vector editing program is Adobe Illustrator

I worked in the printing industry for 20 years - at a magazine and newspaper, designing brochures and various print jobs. I also now work closely with a book publisher. In all cases, we used Quark Xpress on Macintosh.
