York in England.

"York" is dervived from the Old Norse name "Jorvik".

"Jorvik" in turn was derived from the Norse attempt at the Saxon name "Eoforwic".

"Eoforwic" was short for the full name, "Eoforwic Chester" which meant "Roman camp by the wild boar enclosure." The "Eoforwic" part of the name was a corruption of the city's Latin name "Eborucum". The Saxon's apparently just called it by the word in their language that sounded closest to the Latin.

"Eborucum" was the Latinized form the original Celtic name, "Eboros", which meant "place of the Yew trees".

This is probably far, far more information than you wanted ... :)

I like it because it's diverse, different people, ethnicities, lifestyles, etc. All other places in the US I have been too, are leaning more towards one nationality, lifestyle, etc. For ex. Houston, Dallas, LA and others-very Hispanic, same goes for Florida. I love San Francisco, but it seemed to Asian...that's just my opinion, but I could be wrong. It's tough to live there, no doubt, and with a smaller paycheck you would bring more home in other places of the US, but the potential to grow if you make it there it's tremendous. Also, the social life can be great or horrible, depending on what you are looking for. A lot of people are out of town, so you don't find the clicks and childhood originating groups here, so it's easier to meet people. It is not for everyone, and sure not for the ones that are there for the rest of their lives, experience it for a few years, get the experience, then settle down somewhere else... I am not sure why you are sooooo against it. If you call NY fake, then Southern Cali is even worse, I have never seen people more centered around celebrities and brands like in LA...Big cities are big cities regardless of where you are, US, France, Italy, China, Russia etc.
