I want to start actually studying the human mind on my own, and it would be great to read an entertaining, yet informing book. In this age, there are tons of books that you just can't put down. I want one of those! I felt I must ask PEOPLE instead of "searching on the internet" for their opinion instead of critic ratings; give me something you have read yourself and absolutely loved. I appreciate it.

Try Daniel Goleman-"Emotional Intelligence";
Francois Lelord and Christophe Andre-"How to deal with difficult personalities"--it describes different kinds of difficult personalities like "anxious", "obsessive-compulsive", "narcisistic"
Peter Collet-"The Book of Tells, How to Read People's Minds from Their Actions";
M. Scott Peck(a psychiatrist)-"The Road Less Traveled"
None of these are fiction books. I liked them all. I hope this helps. Good luck!

shutter island - dennis lehane [schizophrenia] fiction

that is probably the best book I've read in a long time. its a thriller and it doesnt state the mental disorder like symptoms, but it has great examples through a character's life and his job.

any thriller by stephen king or dennis lehane is going to have some sort of mental disorder.

have fun reading!!

PS. there are great movies out there that pretain to mental disorders:

A beautiful Mind was a great movie on schizophrenia

the three personalities of Eve - great movie on multiple personalities

and there are so much more.. good luck to you

"Science and Society" Edited by Norman Kaplan for Rand McNally is a very good read. I have a version that is ©1963
Mr. Kaplan goes into great details on this subject. It is not meant to entertain, well it is, but it isn't written with the express purpose of entertainment.

I wasn't sure if you meant novels or non-fiction, but I can recommend a few of my favorite novels dealing with mental health issues:

I Know This Much is True- Wally Lamb
Lisa Bright and Dark (about bipolar disorder); John Neufeld
I Never Promised You a Rose Garden (about schizophrenia); Joanne Greenberg (written under pen name Hannah Green)
The biography of Princess Diana, which deals with her struggles with bulimia and depression

I Never Promised You a Rose Garden is an excellent choice (Fiction). Sybill is another excellent work of fiction that also deals with schizophrenia.
