first person is wrong, a psychiatrist doestnt need a phd. peopl with phd and md go above and beyond. psychiatrist is med school. if yorue not science oriented, you might want to be a psychologist instead, phd, and then you start a psychology major in college and continue on. whereas if you start off with biology major in undergrad, and then decide you dont want to be in a school for 12 years, you will have nothign but a bio degree. if you start studyign psychology, you have get a masters and some work afte ronly 6 years total after high school.

Psychiatry is a specialtization of medicine. You would need a premed major as determined by your university (this includes up to calculus at the very least as far as math goes, plus physics and biochem that require calculus), then an M.D. through medical school, and then additional residency in psychiatry. In comparison, in the mental health field... Psychologists who work in mental health generally have at least a master's and often a PhD or PsyD (which is like a PhD without a research component). LPCs (licensed professional counselors) get a master's in counseling and do field work (a kind of internship). Social workers may be licensed at either the master's or bachelor's levels. They should only be doing independent therapeutic work at the master's level. Generally, any education to work as a mental health professional is challenging; it should be. But if you don't want to become a doctor but want to work in mental health, consider one of the above options.

A psychiatrist actually has to have a PhD in psychology AND an MD. A psychologist however does not need the medical degree. Perhaps you would be better off trying to be a psychologist. Unless of course you like the idea of spending an additional 10 years in college after you graduate from high school.

Since a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental disorders, you would need to prepare for medical school. That means lots of science and math classes. You would probably also want to take psych classes, esp abnormal psych., psych testing, etc. in preparation for the higher level stuff.

Psychiatry is a medical degree (MD), so you should first plan on taking the appropriate pre-med curriculum to get into med school. Its only after your 2nd year of med school that you start picking core specializations- like psychiatry.

BTW- there is a defined "pre-med" curriculum that all interested students have to take. ask your college counselor.

It's very noble to help others, I wish you luck in your journey.

You will need an MD. So look at math and bio. See your school counselor. I know they can help.

You will be able to give drugs, so I know you have to have the MD.
