What are they trying to say?

I agree they aren't usually subtle wiscman77, and sometimes I think their stuff is pretty meaningless (Court of the Crimson King) but I do think this song has some subtlety about it.

Well, in England a Moonchild has to do with horoscpes. For example, I was born on 7-22-69 and that would put my birthsign as a moonchild. The first album was recorded 7-21, 22, and 23-1969. There don't seem to be any versions of this song before these recording sessions even though the band had tried recording their first album a couple of times before these dates. It was probably written during the sessions that became In The Court Of The Crimson King.

King Crimson is not usually subtle. "Epitaph" is very straightforward, as is "In the Wake of Poseidon." In my opinion, it means just what the words say. Keep in mind that "In the Court of the Crimson King" is just a whimsical tune.
