How would today's mainstream media cover World War 2?
"Ignominy at Iwo!"
"Mess-up at Midway!"
"Foul-up in the Philippines!"
"Disaster at D-Day!"
The modern press gets so worked up about every casualty in Iraq that I wonder just what their expectations were. Did they think that the opposition would just lay down and die? Bush surely didn't think so. But this is the instant-gratification generation who were raised on videogames and instant credit.

I'm likely stirring up a hornet's nest with my position - but it had to be said.

They would say that the president is a liar, that we can't win, and that the soldiers were fighting to make others rich.

In WWII, the only ones to say that were Tokyo Rose, Axis Sally, and Lord Haw-Haw.

It's not a question of whether two wars should be compared or not, like the above answer mentioned, or the reasons anyone went to war. The question is about media involvement and their ability to sway public opinion. How much is too much?

I totally agree with you, questioner. War is ugly, this has never been a secret. But, do we need to see it on the nightly news? NO. Should reporters be allowed in the area, even on the front lines? HECK NO. The angst they've stirred up in the general population over pictures painted of war that we should not see is proof of why they shouldn't be allowed there.

Even worse, it's caused such an uproar that the rules of engagement are now at the point of ridiculousness. People are so worried about offending others, that soldiers now have to stand around and wave until they are shot at to do anything at all. This is why we are losing - too much media involvement.

And you said it so well!! I agree, I don't think they have a clue what is involved in war. And whats this thing about calling a soldier a troop? Like 2 injured are 2 'troops' injured? You need to stir up the hornets nest , I wished more could be done.

FDR's Pearl Harbor is Bush's WTC. Two attacks both accomplished what they were meant to accomplish!

All of it is moving us closer to a New World Order! If you really reasearch the actual events of the the last 100 years of Americas history you can see this movement.
Don't forget Prescott Bush was a Nazi sympathizer and funneling money for the Nazi Party!
This is a movement of powerful and wealthy Americans as well as powerful and wealthy Europeans!
All moving our countries closer to a one World government.
The media is an important tool to control what the people are allowed to know and when they know it! Many journalists are complicit with this movement!
You don't have to take my word for it you can hear then President GHW Bush ushering in the New World Order for yourself! Listen....it is his speech to the Nation on September 11,1990! The date alone is frightening! Coincidence?
Not likely!

"I'm likely stirring up a hornet's nest with my position - but it had to be said."

what do you mean it just had to be said, it's been said over and over and over. i think at this point we are just beating a dead horse.

but i'll take the bait and answer your question, society has definately changed over the past 50 years. what was an acceptable casualty rate in ww2 is definately not acceptable now.

why? i'm not too sure. maybe just an evolution in american/western society. i also think people question our government a lot more than we used to. also the support for ww2 was a lot higher than this war, therefore a higher number of casualties was acceptable.

You absolutely right. I think the media won it's first victory with Vietnam and Walter Crankenhouse. Despite the fact that we nearly obliterated the North Vietnamiese in the Tet offensive most Americans think we lost thanks largely to the efforts of the media. It is worse than if the media had successfully convinced the population that D-Day was a disaster, leading us to pulling out of the war then.

I don't wonder, I know Liberals would mess up any war America ever had, especially if it disrupts their drug time. Oh they just hate conflict when they'd rather pick flowers, have unadulterated sex, and shoot heroin! They forgot 9/11, or just didn't care. Most of them think we deserved it!

The mainstream media only reacts to the mood of its audience. During WWII the public didn't want to hear how things were screwed up. The public today seems to thrive on it. The media is just telling you what you want to hear. Your own post is a diatribe on how things are screwed up.

Well I agree...Americans are a bunch of programmed morons who are raised on video games, television, and instant credit. They believe everything they see and hear on T.V. and the newspaper...but the truth is...George Bush President of the United States is a man who has flushed all honor and integrity down the toilet. He has spread shame on America, it's Constitution, and it's People. It is a highly embarrassing situation for every Good American. This Man has spun completely out of control and he needs to be stopped immediately. President Bush has discounted himself to nothing more then a mere "War Criminal."

World War II was a fight for survival of the human race against a madman. The war in Iraq was invading a sovereign country with no justification. The two shouldn't be compared.
