personally I think its awesome. I have never celebrated Valentine's day. I celebrate "singles awareness day". Although I am married now, my wife and I still celebrate SA day. We hang out with our single friends. Why you ask, well becuase its way more fun than spending money on a big dinner and a stupid card that gets thrown in a box never to be seen again.
However, No one likes to babysit. I don't know....if they were good friends I suppose I would do it, but otherwise I'd go have fun being single (or pretending that I am...respectfully...).
Good luck!

If you look at it from her point of view... those who aren't single are likely going to be automatically eliminated from the list of possible help. That leaves...well, single folks. :) If she had called and assumed that you weren't doing anything because you're single, then I might be a little miffed. But she wasn't that thoughtless, so what she asked was fine. Yes, it does rather sting to get lumped into the "single" catagory (I feel your pain), but I don't think she did anything wrong. :)
And hey, if you don't have any plans, it might be a good idea to take her up on it! It's much more pro-active than sitting home watching weepy romance movies and wallowing in self-pity. Besides there's the extra cash. :)

I can understand the other persons argument, for lack of a better word.
But, I understand where you are comming from too, I would not appreciate it no matter how it was stated to me.
politely or otherwise, it could sorta feel like an insult, or a hurtful gesture...somehow.
You could have someone that is just a little slow or shy to invite you for a valentines day, lunch or dinner...
Charge them double!
And you should have a friend come with you so you are not too bored.

Time and a half, for valentines day. plus tip. :)<

Here is a different take on your question...look at the positives instead of the negatives. You may make a few dollars. It sounds like several families are getting together for this. That means several of you together watching the youngsters. Turn that in to your own party. Make it a good time instead of a chore. Become an optimist and have your own dates.

if i didn't have plans and i knew i was helping others then yeah i would be ok with it. they are not trying to be mean, they just know who may or may not have plans so that the couples can get a break and go out. so when you have someone and and you need a babysitter then they will call a single person for you too!!! your doing a good thing so don't worry about it!!

I'd probably be a little offended. But, you should look at this as a money making opportunity. You should tell those who ask you to baby sit that it is a holiday, and because of such you require more money. If they refuse inform that you plan to contact your union representitive. If they [those who desire your services] aren't too bright, they'll cave in out of fear. If they are with it, they may appreciate your humor and give you the extra cash.

Your friend should have been more diplomatic. She didn't need to assume that just because you're single, you didn't have plans. Yeah, I would have been put off by the way she asked.
