The continent is not America. We call South America the area below the Panama Canal. It is a seperate continent. Central America is Mexico to South America. North America includes the United States and Canada. Alaska is north of Canada and part of the United States. The term USA is only used in English. The proper name is the United States of America or USA. The people are called Americans not United stater's. USA is often called America for short because the United States of America means the states like California and New York ; the 50 states of and in the country known as America. So yes we are America.
Other countries call themselves Brazil or Columbia or Canada but make no reference to America. Therefore the term is correct.
When you are in the USA you are in the country known as America just like the country known as Russia was the USSR previously. They were United Soviet States of Russia. But other then Texas none of these American states were ever a country unto themselves. Texas, New Mexico, and California used to belong to Mexico.
One more thing look up the defenition of the word of.. It means From. So the states are from America and the people are from America. The name of our country is America named after Americus Vespuci who named the continents after himself because he maped it.

The United States of America is a country on the continent of North America.

This country is the only country in North America with the word America in it's official name. You're right, the full name of this country is The United States of America. America is the shortened name. It's much easier to just say America. Anyone who doesn't understand what it means is in big trouble, he should see a good doctor.
We refer to well known people by their last name. It's not necessary to use their first, middle, and last name each time.

Not exactly. There are 2 continents with the name "America" in them. North America, which consists of Canada, the United States of America, and Mexico. And South America, which consists of too many countries to mention.

United States of America – a federal republic in North America founded in 1776 and comprising 50 states and one federal district (the District of Columbia), with several outlying territories of varying affiliation; commonly referred to as America :-)

It is mostly people from USA who say they come from America, witch in fact is true, but could as well apply to people from Brazil or Canada and all the others. French Canadians will mostly refer USA as États-Unis and its people as "Américains", sometimes Étatsuniens. People from Latin America will often refer USA as Estados Unidos, and it´s people as Estadounienses when said in a respectful way, or "gringo" when said in a pejorative way. The reasons of theses disparities can most probably be explained by sociology : The french Canadian are very proud of being "Quebecois" more then anything, so they mostly don´t care to attribute the "Americain" title to a US Citizen, while a lot of people from Latin America would like more then anything to be able to freely go to the USA while for the most part they can´t, for at least be able to go visit relatives living there. Witch makes lots of people from Latin America really obset about the people appropriating the "America" and "American" referrals, while they feel them as well are American.

the answer is both yes and no, its the federalistic idea. Might I suggest you study US politics before you get into a fight you cant win. The term united states of american is way to long, just as we dont call a britan a great britan. A while back, when we soley states, we declared ourselves by our state not country, such as I am a Marylander by birth. however when the federalist idea came in. The nation decided it needed to function as a nation and take more pride in it. no longer was a man from georgia a georgian but he was an american. or united states of american.

Could it be because "Americans" think they're the best in the western hemisphere, so they alone claim the adjective/noun above all the other peoples in North and South America? Or is it just because the proper name of their country is too long and clumsy to make into an easily-used noun and adjective? Probably a bit of both, I think.
