Thanks everybody.....

So, If the head gaskets blew and the cylinders were affected, as well as having oil in the air filter would not surprise anyone?

My mechanic (not the guy) told me my engine needed to be re-built. that would not surprise anyone? Car is a 1985 500SL Mercedes Euro 182k on engine.

The problems you list could be caused by too much oil but given the age and mileage of the vehicle they could also be part of normal wear and tear too. You may have combined damage and you will likely have a difficult (or impossible) time proving that the damage is a result of too much oil unfortunately.

Oil in the air filter is likely caused by engine blow-by. See the link below for the full article but a relative line is:

"If you do find oil in your air cleaner it may well be that your PCV valve is stuck closed and is therefore not sucking the blow-by out of the crankcase but rather, it is blowing back into the air cleaner. Make sure to check the PCV Valve before overhauling your engine!!"

I have a feeling that you are going to be out of luck given the age and mileage of the vehicle but best of luck if you try to pursue it.

hes right.it sounds to me like its time for a ring job and valve job.the oil is by-passing the rings.
