Before you can install more RAM into your system, you have to research your computer a little bit. First open the PC and look to see if you have an empty RAM bank on your motherboard. If you do, then you have to find out what type of RAM your computer uses (SDRAM, DDR, DDR2), how much RAM it supports, and what speed the RAM is working at. It really depends on if you motherboard supports it. If you're motherboard supports more RAM, then you use what you know to find the right stick for the system. NOTE: If you don't have an extra bank, you might not be able to install more memory OR you can purchase a bigger stick of RAM for the system (if it supports it).

Once you have the memory, you can install it. Open the PC and touch a metal part of the case so you can get rid of any static electricity in your body. Then grab the stick from the sides (don't touch the chips or the copper conductors at the bottom) and insert the stick into the bank. Make sure that the side slips of the bank are pushed out so that when you install the memory, all you have to do is push it in and listen for the clicks of the slips. Once you install the memory, don't close the case; plug in the PC and turn it on. If installed correctly, you should see a message saying that the system memory changed and it should boot up. In Windows XP, hit the Windows logo key+Pause key and the System Properties window will come up. Look at the memory and it should have a higher number than before you installed the stick. If all goes well, then you can close your case and you are done. You just upgraded your PC!

Post the model number of your Gateway and I would be happy to provide with a link to get the specific type of RAM you require.
