It's way better than the PS2, you don't need to get in a rush because there is only a few games that are really good.
Give it at least 6 months and then buy it. by then you will have enough good games to justify the big expense.
Also if you don't have an HDTV, just make sure you get that first, without a HDTV you will not notice the huge difference that the PS3 HD Graphics make.

Well it is a BlueRay DvD player, (And I might add the cheapest one on the market) on top of that the system itself is solid system, though it lacks alot of the abilities the 360 has (Like playing your MP3's in a game, or even downloading content from the web while playing a game, the PS3 can't do either)
I bought one only because I had a large ps2 library and my ps2 died, no use putting 120$ for a system thats going out the window.
But if you don't have a large PS2 library, then my suggestion is to wait, the amount of games that are currently out for the Ps3 is absolutely pathetic.
The price tag is large, but I love the system enjoy it alot, but you have to know its cons before you buy it, hoping that its the Playstations version of the 360

I'd wait a year or two on the PS3. The PS2 still has life to it. There are still good games to be released for the PS2......God of War 2 is coming out in March. This is a must have for PS2 owners.

of course, its a blu ray player, the cell band processor is 40 times faster than the ps2, the six axis controller
of course its worth it, they may say the xbox360 can play hd dvds, but what they dont say is that you have to pay 200 dollers extra to get the hd dvd upgrade for the xbox, wich would make it 600 dollars, the same price as the ps3 that plays blu ray dvds that store 2 and a half times as much data as xbox. But i do have to say i wouldnt buy one right now, even great companies like sony and microsoft have problems with there products that are pushed to get out on the market due to high demand, so wait a year for them to fix them all then get one

I don't think so. It's all about what matters to you, gameplay, graphics, there is nothing special about it in my opinion. And for all the people that were complaining about 360 when it debuted, the PS3 is having problems already too.

eventually it will be worth it. there is going to be really awesome games coming out for it soon, example: MOTORSTORM, DEVIL MAY CRY4, LAIR, MGS4, GRAND TURISMO 5, ARMORED CORE 4, FFVII, KILLZONE 2, TEKKEN, ETC
so get it while they are still on the shelfes, once that VF5 and MOTORSTORM come out, everyone is going to be talking about the PS3
