from what i ve read, it was a deal for peace.. no one really won. The machines realized that while they wanted the humans terminated, they had a bigger threat, smith.
So the machines compromised for peace.
Neo had to give his life in order to beat smith.. but in doing so, the machines knew there would be a balance between the two.. No one side would be totaly powerfull anymore.
So there was peace.

tomclancy is right. Now the oracle didn't trick the humans. The matrix, in order to work, must allow choice, free will, for at least some humans. Many did not want choice. So there's an equation that needs to be balanced out. Neo, through the power of his beleif, or human spirit, can change reality and lead the humans to freedom. Without which i guess many "crops" would be lost. The humans could not do this on their own, they needed the oracle to lead them or mislead them to show them the way (Neo would never have started to confront Smith without the "prophecy" from the oracle). So the oracle is there to "unbalance" the equation. In the end i believe Neo "merged" with the machine"head", the source. I think it's a metaphor for God, and Neo (Jesus) ends up rising to "heaven". In the very last scene the oracle does say "he'll be back to visit us someday..."

I really liked the firt Matrix because it brought up so many questions that didn't have or need answers. They where tough questions and hard to answer so leaving them open ended turned this super action movie into a bit of a thinking man's movie. Then they tried to answer the big questions and came up with some stupid crap! All I know is the computer didn't have complete control over itself and the programs in it went a bit rougue sometimes. Then the agent learned to clone himself and took over and the computer couldn't stop it. Neo could for some damn reason though so he offered to solve their problem in trade for a truce and peace to save Zion. They did crap to explain why his powers worked outside of the matrix and how he managed to get stuck in the matrix while his body wasn't hooked in. They didn't do much to explain why the machines kept destroying Zion and letting it rebuild itself. And if all the humans where good for was body heat, why didn't they just use cows or whatever?

i think it was a human victory IF they wanted to be free / could handle coming out of the matrix. i dont know about the oracle. did neo have to defeat the oracle to win? i have no idea. the matrix revolution stressed me out, lol. but, like i said i think the matrix still existed for those who could not handle leaving it. but if people wanted out of the pods & whatnot they could leave'em & the machines would leave people & Zion alone. who knows though. i didnt find it very cut & dry either but that was probably the intent.

You're not the only one, man. The sequals were awful, I like to imagine that The Matrix and The AniMatrix are the only films, the last two ruined the entire series for me.

Honestly, I am not sure myself exactly what happened. After the second movie, Matrix: Reloaded, it just sort of nose-dived into nonsense, if you ask me.

It was basically what happened in the Korean and Vietnam wars. Peace was declared and each side was still alive for future conflicts.
Incredibly stupid.
