Just saw on the news how the french had bin laden in their sights and asked for authorisation from the US command to shoot him. This request was denied.
Do you think the americans said no because they didn't want the french to get the credit, or was there an even more sinister reason they were not allowed to fire?

The french were following the chain of command.
The head of that chain was a US commander. All this rubbish about france being cowards or doing what they want forgets that they were soldiers, and like all soldiers had to follow orders. The question is why the US commander failed to give that order, not what the french wanted to do or what the french military character is or is not like.
Does the US really want bin laden dead or do they want to kill him themselves

This story has been on BBC news and ITN as well as all the British papers (tabloids and toilet paper alike).
The French special forces officially deny any incident took place, but then if it had they'd say that anyway. It is four French special forces soldiers separately saying it happened.
I'm don't think it's true, however if it is I can understand the theory that the US govt wants Bin laden alive and loose as it creates a focus for the nation, a number one bad guy for the country to unite behind and so America can bolster its defence budget.
In theory at any rate.

Dubai Dubya then might have had to fight Al Qaida too. All our Chickenhawk-in-Chief was after in Afghanistan was a cheap, showy, and irrelevant victory over the Taliban. He cut and ran from Tora Bora because actually fighting that group would have cost too many casualties, making it a real war. In that case, he would have had to impose a draft and raise taxes.
Dumbo Dubya and his bobblehead Cabinet thought that Iraq too would be practically bloodless. Since the American people had never paid attention to the jihadists' activities before 9/11, the BushReich media could claim we won the War on Terror, and all the bombings Al Qaida pulled off since 9/11 would be spun as a problem that foreigners should take care of. Notice how "fighting them over there so they won't bomb over here" didn't protect Spain or the UK.
As for keeping the threat alive, that's what Truman did by not nuking Russia in 1946, which would have kept the Communists from expanding into becoming a legitimate threat. By this fake humanitarianism, Truman ensured that the looters who run America would get 40 years of fat defense contracts, while the American people's character would be inhibited by the designed threat of Communism. Nazi-Cons and Nazi-Libs are together pulling the same stunt today by not confiscating OPEC oil and bankrupting terrorism, bombing terrorist camps in 40 countries, assassinating imams in Europe, and bombing Swiss banks that hold money for Moslems, who are the enemies of mankind.
You don't have to bribe someone to attack you in order to pull this scheme off. You just have to manipulate a real threat so you can dominate a formerly free nation.

Why do you think the US stopped looking for him?
Blackmail.
Unfortunately, the US intelligence has verified small nuclear weapons have entered the US but have had no luck in finding them. Bin Laden's message to the US, unreleased to the public, was clear. If he is captured or killed, the nukes go off.

Are you sure they didnt just surrender to Bin Laden?
Edit: you saw this on the news? What news? Do you automatically believe whatever the "news" decides to tell you?
I think you need to provide a link. Apparently that story hasnt made it to the USA yet, or you could bet it would be plastered all over our liberally biased "news" sources.
