Not really, but it is fun to think about. Personally, i think it's possible with the continued advances in the study of the human mind. Also, im a very paranoid person that has more than once thought my life was the Truman Show, but the Matrix thing has never really bothered me.

I think the genre's explosion is due to the metaphores that could be applied to the machines, machine city & the power grid.
The anamatrix set was very interesting for ideas & paths.
Of the metaphores (developed fully in the films) I find the issue of control to be the most dynamic.
