Why do people rap? It's not music, it's just someone talking into a mic with a repetative beat in the background. What's the point?

The rhyming and meter and the level of skill you need to make a smoothly running verse is the appealing part of rap if you enjoy the technical aspects of it. Otherwise, you enjoy the material and subject matter of the rap, of which there's good and bad (i.e. good: Disses of other rappers, because fights are always fun, and bad: Bling, Thug lyfe, overused and overhyped subjects like that.)
I prefer it over someone screaming into the mic.

Whats the point of Britney spears panting into a mic or Lars Ulrich slamming some sticks on a drum or Jimi Hendrix fuking his guitar on stage or Eric Clapton or Elvis Prestly or Beethoven or the Pussycat Dolls?

You're uneducated about rap music. The stuff on the radio and mtv is crap. listen to the lyrics of lupe fiasco, mos def, talib kweli. they're beats and lyrics are completely different.

Apparently the Recording Industry of America considers it music. So, really what you think is irrelevant.
Thats why there are so many genres of music out there. You don't have to like it. I don't like country, heavy metal, polka, etc. But, I'm not posting dumb as$ questions about it.
