My convict finally laid her eggs yesterday. I was wondering, when will they hatch? Also, I have two pair in the same 55 gallon tank and the mother and father keep harrassing the other pair while the other pair are just chillin in their own territory. Its almost as if they want the tank to themselves. Should I be concerned that the other pair will not reproduce because of the breeding pair?

3-4 days is a normal time until they hatch. It varies slightly depending on the temperature of the tank.

A single breeding pair will take at least the 55 as a territory when they have eggs or babies around. As long as you don;t see physical damage to the other fish you are probably ok, but keep in mind once the babies are free swimming it will only get worse. The best thing to do would be to remove the others from the tank if possible.

It is possible to have more than one breeding pair in a tank, but the constant fighting this will crate will stress both pairs and cause a general decline in health for the adults as well as cause them to occasionally eat the eggs or fry. Again, best bet is to split them up if at all possible.

Hope this helps! MM

I have been breeding convicts for some time now. as long as you see no harm to the other pair they will be fine. the harassing will most likely calm down when the fry are swimming. It should only take about 24-48 hours for them to hatch they then are known as wigglers. then in about 2 days they Will be Free Swimming. The other pair can still have fry, and that will also stop the harassing and they will each take care of a school. But a funny thing is that the size of the school will very day to day(parents cant tell who's fry are who's, and they dont care they take care of them all).

I would use either Hiakri First Bites or (and) the yolk of a boiled egg 'dissolved' in dechlorinated water. You don't actually *have* to do anything special - the fry will live off of infusoria in the tank, and I have seen on may occasions where the parents will seem to chew up food then spit it out for the babies. When they get a bit bigger, freshly hatched brine shrimp are a good choice. With the food in a small container of water, use a syringe, turkey baster, or even an eye dropper to target feed and get the food in the area where they are.
