Yes it is difficult and yes it is competitive. Age isn't a barrier, but you have to do a lot of hard work within your chosen party, and get onto the approved candidates list, before you can even start to make a credible attempt at getting selected as a candidate. You'll probably have to contest a seat which your party has little hope of winning first before you could even hope to get selected to stand in a safe seat. And then you have to win an election. And then the hard work will really start! And remember: no matter what you do, people will only remember the negatives.

If you look at most MPs, in Britain anyway. Most Mps are white middle aged and have had a good educated. Fact.
If you are sure about this profession then no your not too late, although I would warn you it would be very very hard to get into as your not already involved. I would join a party anyway while you doing your degree if you haven't. Also, bear in mind a lot of MPs have come from a business background.
You also need to want to do a hell of a lot of hard work, and work long hours for not very good pay.

A few traits
You don't need good looks (M Becket)
Lie through your teeth (Wee Willie Blunkett Had a bit of Strumpet )
Be a Robin Bastard.. (Lockjaw ( G Brown ))
Ruthlessly allow poor Civil Sevents to commit suicide and not even appologise (Poor David Kelly ) ( Bliar the Bastard )
Its simple really, if you have no morals, no pride and just love money and power

No, not really - you just need the ability to be a liar, a cheat, pompous, self righteous, self centred, self opinionated, arrogant and deaf to your constituents - being a complete tosspot would also help!
