My question is how do i notify Mircosoft about the 12-month warranty. Does the coverage start when the machine was made OR do i call, email, or write them saying "HEY i got a xbox i want the warranty to start" or is it from the time of purchase?... Thank you for your answers!

your warranty starts at the time of purchase ONLY WHEN U BUY IT FROM A STORE...if you buy it on ebay or from a private owner then its a guessing game. buy it from a store or from their websites because if u buy it from a private seller then u will never know if the messed with it or not(even if its sealed).
xbox live is a must with 360. there is not much difference if you buy live from a store or from online...10 bucks or so.
i play 360 every day and its worth buying specially because of xbox live. one thing i didn't know when i bought my 360......
it doesn't come with HD dvd player. it comes with component cable and a dvd player which looks better then regular dvds but not HD DVD PLAYER...for that u will need to spend another 150-200 dollars....and thats why PS3 is more expensive because PS3 comes with blue ray dish which is HD equivalent. but i would still suggest that u buy 360....u can hook it up with ur windows vista and basically there is no limit to it where as with PS3 u only get decent graphics, blue disc player (no video store carries blue disc dvds) and u wont get the A class xbox live experience.

Your 1 year warranty will begin on the date of purchase. Also, with all the new xbox 360 consoles, there is a form inside that you can turn in that will give you a 2 year complete warranty for you system for only 60.00 (highly recommended), which can be renewed every two years for as long as you have the console (even if you have had service done to it or had it replaced) which is a very rare option.

in my opinion with all the ps3 video games not exclusives and the Wii in my view is a baby's gadget and the actual shown actuality that the gadget wasn't designed to compare the ps3 or 360 in pictures the purely authentic determination is the 360! It is from the time of purchase. You know, buy the xbox 360, but dont buy the xbox live separately, because its going to cost you more, you need a credit card for live, so just buy it online and itll cost you less, also, buy the premium pack, it is really worth the extra 100$...If youd buy the extra stuff separately its going to be like 200$ more.
